I'm going to go look at this 2002 Saab 9-5 aero with only 72k on it. What should I look for while I check it out? Here's the car:

Manual: check
You're good

Make sure it doesn't bog down higher in the rev range too bad or make any unusual induction noises, that'll make sure you should have a healthy turbo. Not sure about anything else specific to the car though.

The ad obviously shows that it's an Aero model, but then lists the horsepower at only 184.
The Linear model for 2002 had 185 HP, but the Aero model came with 250 HP and 258 lb/ft.
That's huge right there. Nice price.

I still laugh thinking about how badly James suffered with the tragic auto-fail thing.

whatever it is you'll be safe. Someone posted this to Imgur. Dem pillars.

100% correct

yeah this audi dealership gets a lot of Jalop cars like this and advertises them incorrectly. Still, the price is really nice on this and it's been about a month so they'll play ball.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:20 |

we shouldn't laugh about this thing
it's not nice, lol

Our good buddy Manuél approves this car and chills inside

will do. I'll be sure to wring it out and go through all the gears.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:21 |

Wow. Another reason Saabs are great.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:22 |

I think they fixed it. It says 250 now.
EDIT: nvm, I see what you're talking about in the description. It says 250 in the tech specs.

Keep a spare DI cassette and crank position sensor handy and you'll be just fine. NP times 2
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:27 |

HP is listed correctly under the specs, but overview still says 184.

I just realized the windshield is intact too. All around it is jacked, including the roof point where the windshield meets... Yet nothing. Daaamn
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:29 |
|
yea I just saw that. I went straight to the tech specs
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:31 |

from the looks of it I'm guessing the collision was around the rear quarter panel/trunk and the car is completely totaled but look how safe it looks in the front seat. No glass or anything. You could still sit in that seat.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:35 |

Very nice price. They'll go lower too, they've had it about a month and a half.

Wherever Manuél goes I go. I've been itching to hang out with my old friend again.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:39 |

He's such a dear old pal.
He never leaves you stranded. And he doesn't ask much other than to not physically abuse him.
Such a good friend indeed.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:42 |

might as well just take the doors off anyways - saves weight/looks cooler/don't fall out
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:44 |
|
My good friend Manuél also happens to be at the Audi dealership next to the McLaren/Aston Martin/Bentley dealership with Porsche/Mercedes/Jag right across the street.
I'll either go and buy this $5k car or I'll go hastily buy a $90k car.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:44 |

run it like a jeep! I probably wouldn't even need a windshield either.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 13:58 |
|
we may be on to something here...
![]() 07/27/2014 at 14:03 |
|
Do both!
Flip the Saab to an enthusiast for a small profit to put towards the expensive car :)
![]() 07/27/2014 at 14:07 |
|
Well you'll want the optional extra underwing fuel tanks. You'll also want to find out if it's an earlier A model or a C model. That will-oh you said Saab 9-5 buyers guide. I saw Saab, buyers guide, and the Gripen in the picture...whoops.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 14:11 |
|
Brilliant! Hoon the Saab until I can find a buyer and make a little $$. Maybe sell the E90 so I can have a nice downpayment.. I'll need an all season car. I hear 911's love snow :)
![]() 07/27/2014 at 14:14 |
|
Hahaha I WISH I was going to go look at a Gripen.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 14:16 |
|
we could bring saab back!
![]() 07/27/2014 at 14:30 |

911s supposedly love snow
Dunno first hand , mine had barely even seen rain!
![]() 07/27/2014 at 15:29 |

Damn fuckin' straight.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 15:30 |
|
And they make that torque at like 1600 RPM. Such a weird car.
![]() 07/27/2014 at 15:32 |
|
Look at the trim pieces. Make sure they're all alright. They fall off a lot, are expensive to replace and can be rare. Some are just GM parts though. Make sure the cupholder isn't broken or breaking. But just check out the cupholder. It's too cool.

Sludge was a major issue with the 9-5s until '03. There's no easy way to check for it without doing the oil pan, but proper synthetic oil changed at the right intervals will keep it from happening. Also check the PCV system, Saab released 6 revisions to the system over the years, with the latest one being released in '06. Maintenance records would be the easiest way to tell if this was installed, otherwise you can look at the part numbers and layout to see if it was done. The kit is available for less than $100.
Timing chains can wear prematurely if sludge has built up. They can be incredibly loud, which is a very bad sign. The engine needs to be removed to gain access to the timing chain components. My current 9-5 Aero has 72k miles on it and makes no noise from the chain, but I've owned a few with over 100k that rattled terribly. Proper maintenance is incredibly important with these cars, and if the previous owner has no records be very weary.
The Aero came with the TD04 turbo, which is actually quite robust. They last upwards of 120k miles and are easily rebuildable. Also, the Aero had an upgraded clutch that can handle much more power than the car came stock with.
Overall, I love my Aero. They're fantastic cars let down mostly by careless owners. If you do a computer tune they turn into highway monsters, third gear passing is wicked.

my phone died and it's been an interesting day.
The Audi dealership couldn't find the saab. Yeah, it wasn't sold, buuut they didn't know where it was. Okay. I'm pretty mad because I called and they said they had it out front. So I went to the porsche dealer across the street and started looking at 911's. I saw a Quatroporte and the salesmen just threw me the keys. VERY FUN. The sound was great. After that I went to the Aston/Mclaren/Jag/Bentley dealer just to ogle at whatever they had.
I start talking to a salesmen about the Vanquish. He knows I'm not looking to buy one, but he takes me on a short drive in it and then let's me back it into a space between a P1 and an MP4-12c. VERY SCARY. He gave me his card and said he'd let me take one out for a spin if I come back on a less busy day.

WTF?
How does one lose a Saab? Did it fly away?
Whoa that's awesome you drove the big Italian brute
How did you like the Aston?
![]() 07/27/2014 at 23:29 |

Even riding as a passenger I enjoyed it. Don't let the sporty suspension and big wheels fool you, this is still a great GT. Incredibly luxurious and the power was amazing. Whenever he went to pass someone it would just happen. One second you're behind a person and the next second BAM you're in front.
Parking it was scary but that was mostly because of how expensive the cars I was parking between were. Visibility was pretty good and I really can't wait to stop by on a Tuesday morning so I can really drive one :)
![]() 07/27/2014 at 23:31 |
|
Damn it now there is another car I want to buy :(
![]() 07/27/2014 at 23:42 |

You gotta go to the nearest Aston dealer and drive one. You'll fall in love.
Doooo it!
![]() 07/27/2014 at 23:43 |

stahp it
you're gonna bankrupt me...

LOL
I guess I could store the cars at work and live in a 1 bd apartment
![]() 07/28/2014 at 02:48 |
|
that's exactly how the guy at the dealership greeted me.
"Oh I'm a big BMW fan but let me show you how the upper echelon live!"
I LOL'd.
Studio apartment living is all the rage these days.
![]() 07/28/2014 at 02:49 |

We could buy one of those fancy Mercedes vans and live in it...
![]() 07/28/2014 at 02:52 |

A Diesel sprinter would be a great place to live... In opulence!
We can oplulently live in a van down by the river!
![]() 07/28/2014 at 02:54 |

Sounds awesome!
I bet it could tow race cars to the track
![]() 07/28/2014 at 02:58 |
|
YES I hear those are tow beasts..
I met a guy towing his track prepped Elise at a C&C one day. Those vans are massive, we'll comfortable be living in a van.

If only I didn't love having a nice big walk in shower...
![]() 07/28/2014 at 03:08 |

+1000....
With the jets shooting water from all angles..
Well I have a 24/7 gym membership.. :(
![]() 07/28/2014 at 03:09 |
|
Haha the gym is an option. At least we can pull up in the fancy Merc van or the Aston Martin...
But then we have to shower with a bunch of dudes
![]() 07/28/2014 at 03:12 |
|
My gym hosts tons of Audis, BMW's, and Merc's so the Aston would definitely stand out.
I think my gym single handedly has the highest concentration of old people... You don't even see them work out, they just pop up naked in the Locker rooms.
![]() 07/28/2014 at 03:21 |
|
lol the old dudes probably drive mostly mid and large luxo barges
![]() 07/28/2014 at 03:35 |
|
yeah haha.
I can't forget the most important group at the gym: the milfs in their SUV's or convertibles.
![]() 07/28/2014 at 03:57 |
|
I have an unhealthy obsession for MILFs, lol
Both my last two serious relationships were with MILFs
![]() 07/28/2014 at 10:06 |

There's no such thing as too many milfs!
